Holmes Murphy & Associates independent insurance brokerage said James S. Swift, the chief executive officer of the firm, has been named to the additional post of chairman, effective Jan. 1, 2010.

The Des Moines, Iowa-based firm said Mr. Swift will succeed Doug Reichardt as chairman. Mr. Reichardt, it was explained, was recently named chairman emeritus as part of the organization’s planned leadership perpetuation strategy.

No additional leadership changes are planned, Holmes Murphy said.

Mr. Swift joined Holmes Murphy in 1980 as an account executive. In 1988, he was named senior vice president of sales, and by 1993 he was leading the brokerage division of the company as president of Holmes Murphy Holding Company.

Most recently, he served as president and chief executive officer. The company said that during Mr. Swift’s tenure, Holmes Murphy has grown to the 24th largest risk management and insurance brokerage firm and the ninth largest among privately owned brokers in the United States.
